E-E-A-T
Google's quality framework: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, used to evaluate content credibility.
E-E-A-T is Google's foundational content quality framework, representing Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. This acronym (updated from the original "E-A-T" with the addition of "Experience" in December 2022) encapsulates the key criteria Google's search quality raters use to evaluate content credibility and reliability.
Experience refers to first-hand, practical knowledge of the topic being discussed. Google increasingly values content demonstrating that the author has directly used a product, visited a location, or personally engaged with the subject matter. This criterion particularly affects product reviews, how-to guides, and local business content.
Expertise indicates the author possesses deep knowledge or professional qualifications in the subject area. For technical, medical, legal, or financial topics, Google seeks content from credentialed professionals. For other domains, demonstrated knowledge through comprehensive, accurate coverage can establish expertise even without formal credentials.
Authoritativeness measures how recognized the author or website is as a go-to source for the topic. This includes factors like citation by other authoritative sources, industry recognition, awards, professional publications, and established reputation within the niche. Authoritative sources become reference points that other sites link to and cite.
Trustworthiness assesses whether the content and website are honest, safe, and reliable. Factors include secure website infrastructure (HTTPS), transparent authorship attribution, clear contact information, privacy policies, accuracy of factual claims, citation of sources, and absence of deceptive practices.
For websites incorporating AI-generated content (including humanized AI text), E-E-A-T presents specific challenges. Google's algorithms are increasingly sophisticated at identifying thin, derivative, or low-quality content regardless of authorship. Successful AI content strategies must ensure that AI-assisted writing demonstrates genuine expertise (through fact-checking and subject matter knowledge), establishes authority (through comprehensive coverage and unique insights), and builds trust (through accuracy, transparency, and quality).
The rise of AI writing has made E-E-A-T more critical than ever. Google explicitly addresses AI-generated content in its guidelines, emphasizing that quality matters regardless of production method. Content must genuinely serve user needs, provide unique value, and demonstrate the E-E-A-T qualities that establish credibility. Simply humanizing AI text to bypass detection is insufficient—the content must substantively meet E-E-A-T standards to rank well in search results.
